How private charter pricing works in Kenya
Updated 1 Nov 2026
Two charter quotes for the same trip can look very different. Here is what sits behind the number, and how to compare quotes fairly.
You are paying for the aircraft, not the seat
A charter is priced per aircraft. Whether you fly two people or the full cabin, the main cost is the same, so per-person cost falls as the group grows. For families and groups of six or more, a private safari flight can come close to scheduled fares per person.
Flying hours, including empty legs
Operators charge for the hours the aircraft flies. If the aircraft is based in Nairobi and you are flying one way to the coast, it still has to fly home, and that empty leg is usually in the price. A return trip on the same day or the next can therefore cost much less than two one-way charters.
Waiting and overnight costs
If the aircraft waits for you at the destination, you may pay for crew accommodation and parking instead of a second positioning flight. For a short stay this is often the cheapest option; for a longer one, it can be cheaper for the aircraft to go home and come back.
Fees on top
Landing and parking fees, airstrip and conservation fees, and for international flights, permits and handling charges, can all add to the price. A good quote lists which of these are included.
How to compare quotes
- Check the aircraft type and seat count, not just the price.
- Check whether positioning, waiting and fees are included.
- Check the baggage limits, especially on helicopters and light aircraft.
- Check the cancellation terms and how they change as the date gets closer.
